Venice

We stayed in Venice for 3 nights and it is an extraordinary and beautiful city. The amazing thing about Venice is that there are no cars whatsoever and the people of Venice live and travel by foot and water. Coming from London and constant air and car pollution it was like being in heaven. Venice is built on 117 small islands and holds 150 canals. Over 400 bridges connect with land. It is so magical and so beautiful and so far separated from the "real world"… I guess that’s why everybody considers it to be so romantic and timeless. After venturing over dozens of bridges we headed for the landmarks. First stop was St Mark’s square , which is referred to as the finest square in Italy.

It is a relaxed, but at the same time buzzing place to chill out and watch the world go by. The pigeons have become the symbol and focal point of this vibrant and romantic Venetian life. On the bank of the grand canal is the pier for gondolas which stop at the square. There are two columns just outside the square, where the two symbols of Venice : St Mark’s Lion and the statue of St Theodore, the patron saint of Venice, keep watch over the city.
Leaving the buzzing crowds behind us we headed for quieter spots of Venice where we found peace and quiet in the back streets. I’m sure you could get lost for days in the endless maze of small winding streets and deserted squares. Later in the afternoon we took a breathtaking gondola ride which can only be described as passionate and treasured for always. Towards the end of the day we took a boat ride through the grand canal and not forgetting our leisurely walk through the main streets to do a bit of shopping.
We also spent a day on a beach in Venice which was a day well spent relaxing.
